War of the Ring by SPI

In 1977 the SPI company produced this game, a fairly convincing, if lop-sided representation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings”. It uses art work that is very similar to or taken directly from Ralph Bakshi’s adaptation of the first half of the book, the movie appearing in 1978. The designer of this game is the outstanding Richard Berg.

There are three editions of this game out there. The white Bakshi cover book case box, the greenish book case box and the flat pack folio box that also contains the Sauron and Gondor mini games.

I played this game every Saturday for about 10 months in 1981 and 1982. I lost twice. It is fundamentally flawed, basically every game came down to a giant WWF on Mount Doom. You can still pick this game up on EBay, the price varies depending on condition, but an unpunched example will set you back $100 or so.
